Censored Beauties

I developed my Censored Beauties artwork back in 2012 as a comment on how woman were viewed both within art and the media. The first paintings I created always had their eyes censored away as play on the idea that ‘eyes are the window to the soul’ and that by hiding their eyes, I was hiding their true identities – purposely playing on the idea that these woman were being viewed for their looks rather than who they were as individuals. As time has gone on these images have developed to include their mouths also being censored as a commentary on their words and opinions also being hidden away and/or ignored as well as producing images where the woman’s eyes have been left as plain white, void of pupils.

Though probably the paintings that I was best known for, certainly the images that help launch my career internationally, as time has gone on they have become less and less a part of the work that I create; Though elements from these paintings continue and I still on occasion create artwork which includes the female form, I have certainly seen a change in the way that I approach these images and the meaning I put behind them.
